CHAPTER 23

I WAS A little late getting to the small cemetery. The all-nighters were taking their toll. A dense marine layer made the world appropriately overcast and gray. Jasper and Clive accompanied me, though they stayed by the Bentley when I approached the burial site. My shoes sank into the damp grass. A couple of cemetery workers stood at a distance. I slowly approached this strange goodbye. I stood alone with the casket that held my old professor’s ashes. I held a single red rose that I had taken from the mansion’s garden. I felt sorrow for the man who had become caught up in the world of the undead. It was hard to accept how cruel my husband had been towards the writer who had betrayed him. Bram had deceived me too but he was a tortured soul. Would I meet a similar fate if the Baron thought I crossed that line, despite his love for me? The undead wanted me to trust them, but who could I really trust? Because of my knowledge of Bram’s fate, I wondered how long it would be possible to safely walk between the worlds of mortals and immortals. The undead were just as fallible and prone to mistakes due to their emotions as Shorts. Except, of course, the Magus. He seemed to be unflappable, even when he was confronted by Simone and Harold’s treachery. I wish that I had been able to spend more time with Bram. I had so many questions that only he could answer. I would now have to find the answers on my own. It was time to stop my mental meandering and face the task at hand.

“Goodbye, Professor Bishop. You taught me well. I forgive you.” I placed the rose on his casket. I returned to the car and asked Jasper to take me to a bagel deli on Santa Monica Boulevard. When we arrived, I told them to wait for me outside. I was starting to feel a sense of what it meant to be a Baroness. I walked inside and saw my reason for coming.

“Hi Grigoryi.” The surprised monk looked around to see who had accompanied me. “I just wanted to make sure you were okay.”

“I’m good. One of your friends gave me enough money to get an apartment,” he replied, “and the deli had an opening.” He leaned over the counter and whispered, “Are you okay?”

“I am, thanks for asking.” I saw his boss looking our way. “I’ll take a dozen assorted bagels, a large container of jalapeno cream cheese and a small black coffee. Also, can you describe who gave you the money?”

As he put the bagels in a bag he said, “The guy in Arabian robes. He said it was because I tried to help you. I’ll never judge anyone from the Middle East again. He gave me $5,000.”

“You were brave,” I replied. Somehow, I was not surprised by the identity of his benefactor.

“You were awesome, standing up to evil that way,” he said and walked over to the register.
